Inflammation is not the enemy you’ve been told it is.
Don’t get me wrong, inflammation can lead to a host of issues, and chronic inflammation is often linked to disease. However, contrary to popular belief, inflammation itself isn’t the root cause of disease. Instead, inflammation is a smart, purposeful response that the body employs when there’s damage—it’s a necessary step in the healing process. It works to remove debris and pave the way for repair.
We’re often advised to reduce inflammation (and its symptoms) using natural or synthetic remedies. But the real priority shouldn’t be just suppressing inflammation—it’s addressing the underlying damage. When we eliminate toxins (like toxic foods or chemicals), allow injuries to heal, manage stress and trauma, and tackle whatever’s triggering the inflammation, the inflammation naturally subsides on its own.
So yes, we might use tools to ease symptoms for relief, but we must also focus on what’s driving the inflammation in the first place. If we only treat the symptoms and ignore the cause, the inflammation will persist, halting the repair process. And it’s then – when the body can’t repair itself – that disease can take hold.
